Dr David M. Berry

Specialist Subjects: Technology, intellectual property rights (IPRs), the commons, code, the information society, free/libre/open-source, philosophy of technology, financialisation, political economy, real-time streams, media/medium theory, and software studies.

Biography

David joined Swansea in 2007 as a Lecturer in Media and Communication. Prior to this he undertook research at the University of Sussex where he obtained his doctorate. His research interests focus on media/medium theory, software studies, state-of-the-art technologies, and sociological and philosophical research into technology. He is particularly interested in the methodological and theoretical challenges of digital media and has strong research interests in Heidegger, Kittler, Arendt and Latour.  He is also a member of the Centre for the Study of Politics and Culture (C-SCAP).

  • Theories of digital code/software and their cultural representation.
  • Data visualisation and financialisation, particularly in relation to intimate media. 
  • Cultures of financialisation and the representation of finance/markets in popular culture. 
  • The computational turn in Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences (Digital Humanities).
