The annual Welsh Varsity is a full day event taking place in the city of Swansea or Cardiff across various sites. The event is an opportunity for students of the university to enjoy a day of sporting events between Swansea University and neighbours Cardiff University. Thousands of students head down to pitch side on the day to cheer on their university.
With the list of competing sports growing every year, the Shield competition is getting bigger and bigger. The current sports competing on the day are American football, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, fencing, golf, hockey, martial arts, lacrosse, netball, rowing, sailing, squash, surf, tennis and ultimate Frisbee.
After spending the day cheering on the matches in the shield, thousands of students descend into the stadium to watch the rugby teams fight it out for the Varsity Cup.
The competition culminates in the showpiece rugby match, which in 2011 took place in front of a crowd of 14,000 at the home of Welsh rugby, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Many students have gone on to represent and gain contracts with semi-professional and professional clubs on the back of great performances in the Welsh Varsity Match. Previous teams fielded by Swansea University have included Welsh internationals Alun-Wyn Jones, Richie Pugh and Dwayne Peel.
