The Further Maths Support Programme Wales was delighted to once again be able to offer Year 9 Maths Masterclasses.
The Royal Institution Year 9 Maths Masterclasses
The programme offered six Mathematics Masterclasses to Year 9 students from schools in Swansea, Carmarthenshire and Neath Port Talbot with the support of the Mathematics Department, Swansea University, The school of Education, University of Wales Trinity St Davids, The FMSP and The Mathematics Advisors for Swansea, Carmarthenshire and Neath Port Talbot. Topics covered included Theory and Practice of Juggling; Cryptology, Randomness and Special Relativity. The course was attended by 83 Year 9 students from 18 schools.
Swansea University and UWTSD Year 10 Masterclasses for Girls
As the programme for Y9 became very popular and oversubscribed recently, we put a new programme for girls in Y10 who have an aptitude for and a real interest in the art and practice of Mathematics. Through a variety of topics, students were given a taste of the nature of Mathematical thinking behind ground breaking mathematics research. Classes were held on Saturday mornings and the course is supported by the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and The Royal Institution. Each week different speakers deliver workshops on Mathematical topics. This was the first year Swansea University ran the Year 10 Masterclasses and there were 60 girls participating on the course from nine schools.
