‘Dreaming Drama:
Jean Cocteau and Les Chevaliers de la Table ronde’

For his valedictory lecture Derek Connon returns to an author who has interested him throughout his career, Jean Cocteau, and his play of 1937 about the knights of the Round Table, which Cocteau said came to him in a dream.

In keeping with Derek's interest in music, more than one musician will also find his way into the lecture.

Derek Connon (for lecture June 2018)Professor Derek Connon graduated from the University of Liverpool, with a first degree in French and a PhD thesis on the plays and dramatic theory of Diderot.  He worked at the Queen’s University of Belfast, the University of Exeter and the University of St Andrews before taking up his present post in the French Department at Swansea in 1989. He is interested in literature of all periods and types, although his research has concentrated on the theatre and he has published on various authors from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. As well as specialising in research into drama, he has held a long interest in practical drama, and has acted in and directed a number of productions of French plays. This practical experience has influenced both his teaching and research. He is a keen musician, playing the violin and viola.
