On Wednesday 11 November, Professor Angela V. John will give the 2015 lecture at Dyffryn Lower School, Port Talbot.
On 11 November 2015, Professor Angela V. John will give the Annual Richard Burton Lecture at the Dyffryn Lower School, Port Talbot. Her lecture will be entitled: 'Educating Richard: Actors and Educators in Port Talbot, 1925-55'.
In the week marking 90 years since the birth of Richard Burton, historian and biographer Angela V. John, who comes originally from Port Talbot and is an Honorary Professor at Swansea University, will draw upon her brand new book The Actors’ Crucible. Port Talbot and the Making of Burton, Hopkins, Sheen and All the Others (Parthian, November 2015). Her lecture will examine how educators - both in schools and in youth centres - nurtured the talent of promising young actors from Port Talbot over a period of thirty years, from 1925-55. She will focus on Richard Jenkins (Burton) and his contemporaries and Anthony Hopkins, showing how a few farsighted individuals who were passionate about drama helped to transform these young peoples’ lives and opportunities, laying the basis for a town of stars as well as steel.
The lecture will begin at 6.30 pm and be given at Dyffryn Lower School, Talcennau Road, Port Talbot, SA13 1EP.
This is a free event, and all are welcome. To book your place, please click here: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-2015-annual-richard-burton-lecture-tickets-18933311043
