A warm welcome to all.

The chance discovery of a list of men on an illuminated memorial following a clear-out of of a cupboard in Caersalem Newydd Chapel inspired this new project, and following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Dr Matthews, who is a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Lecturer in Swansea University’s History department, began researching the names of those listed on the Roll of Honour in order to tell the stories about the men, their families and the impact the conflict made on their lives along with the community.

With the help of pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe and members of the public who searched attics and albums, Dr Mathews has traced what happened to more than 50 of the 81 men on the list.

The results of this project will be brought together in the free booklet which will be distributed locally. It will also provide the basis of research to shed more light on how the war really affected communities in Wales.
