Using an extract of Shakespeare's Othello, Dr Tom Cheesman discusses the importance of language, the shortcomings of machine translation, and his own research and partnership with computer scientists to develop techniques that offer insight and understanding of the social, political and cultural factors that influence the meaning of translations.

Dr Cheesman is a Reader in German and Co-Director of the Centre on Digital Arts and Humanities at Swansea University. He has been working with software developers on new digital techniques to help understand how translations vary, and why.
