John Goodby: The Poetry of Dylan Thomas: Under the Spelling Wall
Professor John Goodby of Swansea University is an leading expert on Dylan Thomas; his new study argues that Thomas was a hybrid, tricksterish, gothic-grotesque modernist poet, whose work speaks directly to early twenty-first century concerns about gender identity, micro-managerial jargon, war, and climate change. Also a poet and translator, John's translation (with Tom Cheesman) of Adel Guemar's State of Emergency (2007) won a major P.E.N. award, and he was the winner of the 2006 Cardiff poetry competition with his poem 'The Uncles', included in the Faber/Forward Best Poems of the Year (2008) and Best Poems of the Decade (2011) anthologies.
