On Wednesday 11 September 2013, a group of new researchers and specialist business archivists will meet at one of Britain’s most iconic steel making sites, the Tata Steel plant in Port Talbot. This one-day event, jointly organised by Dr Louise Miskell, of the Department of History and Classics, and Robert Dangerfield , Public Affairs Manager at Tata Steel,  and supported by the Economic History Society, provides a unique opportunity to hear recent historical research findings and to debate the scope and extent of archival collections for supporting future research on  steel in twentieth-century Britain.

Among the speakers will be Dr Valerie Johnson, head of research at the National Archives, Kew, and Dr Joan Heggie, who led the successful British Steel Archives Project at Teesside University, 2008-2011. Elisabeth Bennett and Stacy Capner, of the Richard Burton Archives, will also share the results of their survey of Welsh steel industry records.

The day will also showcase some exciting new research by up-and-coming historians from Wales, Scotland and the North of England. Among them, Bleddyn Penny, PhD student at Swansea, will present some of the preliminary findings of his study of ‘Port Talbot and its Steel Workers, 1951-1988’. David Bradley, of GlasgowCaledonianUniversity will share his expertise on the occupational health of Scottish steelworkers.

The final session of the day will be a round-table discussion in which all delegates are invited to contribute their ideas and suggestions for future research into the history of the steel industry and its communities in Wales.
