Swansea University and Dunvant Primary School has been awarded the European Language Label 2011 for their European-funded Vill@ge project. The award was presented at a ceremony in London on September 25th. This project created a virtual language learning environment in Second Life which allowed primary school children in Dunvant to meet other school children in Athens in Geece and Szeged in Hungary. The children moved around the internet-based virtual environment and interacted in virtual supermarkets, clothes shops and museums. The British children helped the others practise their English and the Greek children taught Greek to the English speakers. The project then tested the language learning which occurred in primary schools in Swansea and in Greece and Hungary. The environment was devised by Professor James Milton (Swansea University), together with the software engineering company Exodus in Greece.
