The Stalinist Musical: Entertainment as Propaganda

This year's Annual Joint Lecture of the Association of Friends of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Swansea University Department of History and Classics will be given on Friday 5 February at 7.30pm in in the James Callaghan Lecture Theatre at Swansea University by

(Emeritus Professor of Politics at Swansea University).

The title of the lecture is:


Professor Taylor's lecture will examine the mass cinema of the Stalin era, focusing on the Soviet 'musical comedy' as an early response to the ideology and aesthetics of the Hollywood musical.  The lecture will be copiously illustrated with subtitled extracts from the relevant films, none of which has ever been released in the UK.

Richard Taylor is an authority on Russian and Soviet cinema and the use of film for propaganda purposes. He has spent several extended periods researching in libraries and archives in the former Soviet Union, Germany, France and the USA. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has held Honorary Fellowships in Oxford, London, Canterbury and Washington DC.
