The First Annual UWICAH Postgraduate Conference took place in Singleton Abbey on Saturday 9 November 2013.

Organised by three PhD candidates from Swansea’s Department of History and Classics (Zuzanna Bennett – Egyptology; Rachel Bird – Classics; Alex Ferron – Ancient History) the event invited postgraduate researchers from the three constituent universities of the Universities in Wales Institute of Classics and Ancient History (Swansea, Cardiff, University of Wales Trinity Saint David) and beyond to present papers based around the theme of ‘Transformations in the Ancient World’.

The impetus behind the new venture was to provide postgraduates with an opportunity to share and learn about each other’s research, with a view to facilitating networking within Wales and further afield. Putting postgraduates at the heart of the experience was the priority, in terms of organisation, presentation, and discussion.

With generous funding from UWICAH, RIAH, and History Research Wales, the event was a resounding success. The range of papers presented by the students was wide, encompassing Egyptian demons, Classical and Imperial Greek literature, and the effect of the rise of Christianity on the Late Antique period. Discussion was lively and engaging, clearly demonstrating that the research environment for classicists, ancient historians and Egyptologists here in Wales is thriving and forward-looking. There were also workshops presented by university staff on research groups, teaching, and the heritage sector, giving both home and visiting students an insight into these important and pertinent issues. The event was opened and closed by senior members of the Department of History and Classics, Dr Martina Minas-Nerpel and Professor John Morgan.

Given the success of this inaugural event, it is hoped that annual meetings will continue, with hosting duties falling to each constituent university in turn. The organisers would like to thank everyone who attended the event and those who assisted with advice throughout the planning process, and of course the funding bodies mentioned above.
