Liz WrideSwansea University playwright Liz Wride (left) -- who completed her PhD in Creative Writing last year -- is at the head of the queue of events celebrating this year's centenary of the birth of Dylan Thomas.

Her new comic drama, Number 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, will play at venues in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea next week as part of the Welsh Fargo Theatre Company's On the Edge season. It will open at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff,  on Tuesday, then move to the  Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea on Wednesday and then play the Newport Riverfront on Thursday.

Dr Wride turns expectation  on its head by setting the play in the here and now and building it around one Tom Dylan -- the unfortunate offspring of a Swansea couple obsessed with Dylan Thomas. The family arranges to stay in Thomas's birthplace, 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, for the night of the great poet's 100th birthday -- which happens  to coincide with Tom's 18th. His birthday present, for the umpteenth time, is Dylan's collected poems. Not surprisingly, he is pretty fed-up with playing second fiddle to a dead poet. That is until he wakes up to find a girl called Fern Hill in bed beside him.

It's a hilarious metaphoric tale which combines a tender coming-of-age story with a playful consideration of what it means to  live under the shadow of a Great Presence ... it also has some beautiful things to say about the nature of poetry.

The script-in-hand performances feature five of Wales's finest performers. The show is directed by D.J.Britton, Director of Undergraduate Studies in Creative Writing at Swansea University.
