3 Minute Thesis

Swansea University Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

What is the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition?

This is a unique opportunity to experience  the creative and dynamic interpretations from our postgraduate researchers as they share their research with the university community. Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) developed by The University of Queensland, has rapidly developed and spread throughout the UK, with 42 UK Institutions holding a 3MT competition last year.

The exercise challenges research students to captivate a non-specialist audience with their research and its significance in just three minutes. Competitors are allowed one PowerPoint slide, but no other resources or props.

Who can participate?

  • Active PhD and Professional Doctorate (Research) candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission)
  • Graduates are not eligible.

There are rounds at Faculty/College level. The winners of each Faculty will fight for being the Swansea University winner, who will go to UK 3MT national final.

Both the 3MT and Poster Competition will be judged by the Directors of Postgraduate Research. The 3MT and Poster Competition is hosted by the Postgraduate Research Office, Academic Services and the IAA (Impact Acceleration Account – EPSRC), REIS.
