Primary Campus Visits
During recent years Reaching Wider has developed new and exciting activities for local primary schools in Communities First areas. In the main these have been targeted at pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6. Many of these activities have been subject specific and have seen pupils visiting campus and working with our student leaders. Activities have included visits to the university radio station, interviewing students on campus , undertaking the university nature trail and building/racing rocket cars. We hope that these days will inspire these pupils and will provide them with an early introduction to higher education.
"The day gives pupils an insight into university life which they will never have had before and gives them an insight into a life poles apart from many of the pupils’ backgrounds." Teacher from Cymer Afan Primary School

Primary Science Club
Reaching Wider works in partnership with the Open University in Wales (and its own programme of intergenerational learning) to develop and run after school science clubs in local Communities First primary schools. Pupils who attend these sessions are predominantly in Years 5 and 6. With a different activity each week including drag racing, tower building, making a volcano, and using a Raspberry Pi computer, primary school children are given the opportunity to work with Swansea University and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David students and they are able to experience a range of topics connected to STEM subjects. We hope that these one-hour sessions will inspire the children and provide them with increased confidence in science.
"The pupils had a wonderful time and parents have commented on how enthused they were when discussing the activities." Teacher from Glyncorrwg Primary School
