PSPU Function - What we do

The Planning and Strategic Projects Unit (PSPU) was established to support the University’s Senior Management Team (SMT) and the University Management Board (UMB) in achieving their strategic aims and ambitions.

  • The PSPU facilitates the delivery of the University’s strategic ambitions through a range of Strategic Change initiatives.
  • Working in partnership with all Professional Services Units, Academic Colleges and Schools, students and key external stakeholders, the PSPU leads on business planning processes including resource allocation.
  • The PSPU provides a professional project and risk management resource to assure the successful implementation of externally funded projects and activities critical to the delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan.
  • It also leads on the creation and development of strategic partnerships which have a real impact on the regional economy.

Change Management

Change management at Swansea University involves the process of monitoring and assessing strategic change and its impact across the institution. It can involve people, culture, technology, infrastructure and the organisation of the University; and impacts on or is affected by the individual, team, change leaders and the organisation. Risk and Project Assurance

The key aim of the Risk and Project Assurance Team is to provide a high level of confidence across the University in relation to University objectives and strategic initiatives. They work in partnership with Academic Colleges and Professional Services across the organisation to provide a project assurance and risk management function. They are responsible for fostering and growing the project management community and culture within the University, for administering risk assessment processes and also ensuring that more active risk management is conducted across the University. The team provides professional project and risk management oversight of all major projects in delivery and ensures the successful implementation of externally funded projects and activities critical to the delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan. Planning and Performance Management

The Planning and Performance Management Team works collaboratively to support the University in developing and presenting its strategic vision through the translation of vision into operational activity through the University’s Strategic Plan.

In supporting the University’s aspiration of sustainable and continued growth, the Planning and Performance Management Team work with key partners across the University to develop, deliver and refine critical strategic business processes such as the business planning and resource allocation process, the approach to gathering business intelligence and the core delivery mechanisms for strategic priorities through an implementation plan. Strategic Regional Collaboration

The Strategic Regional Collaboration team, based within the Planning and Strategic Projects Unit, is responsible for creating and sustaining strategic partnerships which have a real impact on the regional economy and address key priorities in the region such as tackling poverty, health and wellbeing and social inclusion. 

The team promotes Swansea University and establishes positive partnerships and collaborative in the region, particularly with FE colleges, focusing on skills for growth and pathways to Higher Education.   CUSP (College University Skills Partnership) was established in order to facilitate this and an Employer Advisory Group ensure that the work is informed by the needs of industry. Strategic Development

Swansea University is growing at a tremendous rate with an ambitious Strategic Plan and ever increasing pool of opportunities to prioritise and develop.  The Strategic Development Team within the Unit is responsible for working alongside the Senior Management Team to provide a framework to support the coordination, development and visibility of a range of strategic opportunities that will contribute to the delivery of the University Strategy. 

Working in partnership with the colleges and PSUs, the Strategic Development team support the progression of strategic opportunities, ensuring all projects have the appropriate project management structures, processes and documentation in place; resolving and escalating issues, unblocking obstacles and drafting business plans to ensure the opportunity has the best chance to progress successfully to the implementation stage. Strategic opportunities are those that will have the potential to deliver step-change growth in the scale and quality of University business and will often have a significant impact on regional economic growth.
