What we do

The University’s Strategic Plan provides a comprehensive framework for action. Swansea University’s vision is to be a “research-led university of international quality”.

Our staff, students and stakeholders will all play a critical role in shaping our future, so the Planning and Strategic Projects Unit (PSPU) was established to coordinate the development and implementation of strategy and to help improve the University’s performance in managing change.

The Planning and Strategic Projects Unit is responsible for the development, implementation, and review of the University’s corporate and business planning processes. It also provides a programme and project management resource through which the implementation of the projects and activities critical to the University’s transformation can be coordinated and directed.

The Four Sections

Planning & Student Experience

We programme manage the projects and activities that contribute toward the Swansea University student experience.  This includes learning and teaching, and activities spread across student services, information services and systems, facilities, residences, employability, and widening access.

We also take a leadership role in considering, and evaluating opportunities for collaboration with other HE institutions and bodies (such as employer representative groups and FE colleges) in order to enhance the University's student recruitment, taught provision and income.  In addition, we work with colleagues to develop and disseminate analytical knowledge about league tables, so as to promote, within the University in its broadest sense, behaviours that better our league table standing and external reputation.

Major Projects

The Major Projects Team

The Major Projects Team work in partnership with Academic Colleges and Professional Services across the organisation to provide a project assurance and risk management resource. They ensure the successful implementation of externally funded projects and activities critical to the delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan.

The team conducts oversight management of all major projects in delivery. They also are responsible for fostering and growing the project management community and culture within the University, for administering risk assessment processes and also ensuring that more active risk management is conducted across the University. The team delivers internal staff training on a variety of project management topics and support staff working towards professional qualifications via an e-learning platform.

The Major Projects Team at Swansea University is currently working closely with the Association for Project Management (APM), the largest professional body of its kind in Europe, to align our practice with established industry standards and to achieve the highly considered APM Corporate Accreditation status. To this end, Swansea University considers the APM Body of Knowledge and the APM Competence Framework as leading knowledge references for project management functions, technical language and competences.
