Professor Sondipon Adhikari, chair of aerospace engineering at Swansea University, has been awarded a prestigious Royal Aeronautical Society fellowship.

The Royal Aeronautical Society is the world’s only professional body dedicated to the aerospace community.  Established in 1866, it now has over 22,000 members around the world and promotes all work – arts, science and engineering – relating to aerospace.

Professor Sondipon AdhikariA fellow is the highest grade of membership attainable within the Society.  To qualify, the Society stipulates that an individual must have made an “outstanding contribution in the profession of aeronautics”, or have attained a position of high responsibility.

Professor Adhikari (pictured) is based in the College of Engineering at Swansea University’s Bay Campus.  His work draws on structural dynamics, probabilistic methods and computational mechanics, applying them to problems in science and engineering.  Specific areas he works on include:

  • Multiscale mechanics, metamaterials
  • Renewable energy - wind turbines, vibration energy harvesting
  • Uncertainty quantification in computational mechanics
  • Dynamics of complex and nano-scale systems

Professor Sondipon Adhikari said:

"I was very pleased to receive this recognition from the Royal Aeronautical Society.   It is an honour for me but also for the department.  Here at Swansea we have a very highly-regarded team working on aerospace engineering.  We are ranked 7th in the UK and one of the top 200 departments in the world."
