Masterclass inspires young physicists The Physics Department welcomed AS and A level pupils to a Particle Physics Master Class at the College of Science this week where they found out about gravitational waves and trapping anti-matter.

Staff and pupils at the physics masterclassThirty eight pupils and four teachers from Merthyr Tydfil College, Cyfarthfa High School and Brynteg School also learned about discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN and got the chance to find the Higgs boson themselves in a hands-on data analysis session.

The pupils from Merthyr Tydfil College and Cyfartha High School are also to get the opportunity to visit the CERN facility in Geneva after Easter.

The next Physics Department Master Class is scheduled in June and is part of a wider scheme that also includes the Welsh Teacher Programme, aimed at inspiring younger physicists about the wonders of the science and the range of career possibilities available for those who wish to take it further.
