Join the celebrations at Swansea University’s stand at this year’s National Eisteddfod of Wales Carmarthenshire between 2 - 9 August.

At 11am on Monday, Steve Morris from the South West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre will be joined by Professor Paul Meara as they launch their new book, ‘Geirfa Graidd’. This book includes the core vocabulary for those studying the Welsh for Adults Cwrs Mynediad course.

Later on Monday, Professor Iwan Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Swansea University will launch a special competition that will give someone the opportunity to name one of the public squares at Swansea University’s new Bay Campus.

Eisteddfod 2014If you’ve ever wondered how a 3D printer works, call by our stand on Tuesday morning to join Swansea University’s Materials Live! Team as they conduct a series of exciting experiments – including the amazing 3D printer! 

Swansea City FC Ambassador, Lee Trundle will be at our stand between 10am and 12pm on Tuesday, and there will be chance to win a Swansea City football shirt signed by some of the players.

In a special Soapbox Science event, scientist from the university will don their white coats and take their soapboxes to promote their specialist subjects across the Maes on Tuesday, so keep an eye out for them! The aim is to present challenging ideas from the world of science to the audience in a fun and informative way.

The stand will close on Tuesday to the sound of jazz and beatboxing as Daniel Williams and Ed Holden relive their exciting ‘Dylan Live’ tour, tracing Dylan Thomas’ trips to New York in the 1950s.

‌History will be the main theme of the stand on Wednesday, as we conduct a march through the Maes with replica South Wales miners’ banners, before conducting a session at 11am, celebrating 40 years since establishing the South Wales Miners’ Library. Later, Swansea University Fellow, Heini Gruffudd will be discussing the collections at Swansea University’s Egypt Centre with the TV presenter and Swansea University graduate, Siân Thomas. At 2pm, Dr Dr Llŷr Gwyn Lewis, chaired bard Myrddin ap Dafydd, and Naomi Jones, Project Manager of Yr Ysgwrn will discuss writings from World War One.

The Archdruid, Professor Christine James, will deliver the Hywel Teifi Edwards Memorial Lecture in the Babell Lên at 11am on Thursday. The lecture title is ‘Ffwrneisiau Awen Gwenallt’.

Prifysgol Abertawe Eisteddfod 2014 Following the memorial lecture, a reception for Swansea University alumni and partners will be held in the company of the Vice-Chancellor and Professor Christine James at 12.30pm at the university stand. At 4.30pm in the Lolfa Lên, Jacôs, a session of poetry and music will be held in the company of some of Swansea University’s finest creative talents, including: Christine James, Llŷr Gwyn Lewis, Fflur Dafydd, Euros Lyn, Gwenan Evans and the folk-jazz group, Burum.

At 11am on Friday, Dr Gethin Matthews and graduates from the Department of History will discuss their local history project that focusses on the lives and experiences of some of the village men of Treboeth, Swansea who fought in the First World War, and the women who worked in a weapons factory in Pembrey.

Subsequently, as we celebrate 90 years since the BBC began broadcasting from Swansea, a reunion will be held in the company of writer Jon Gower, Radio Cymru’s Editor of Programmes, Betsan Powys, and Swansea University Media Lecturer, Non Vaughan Williams. This is an opportunity for those who broadcasted over the wires from Swansea to come together and for the public to hear more about Swansea’s role in the Corporation

Academi Hywel Teifi is sponsoring Radio Cymru’s Battle of the Bands competition this year, and various acts will perform on the stand all week, including: Gildas, Côr y Wiber, Bromas and Tom ap Dan.
