Dr Fflur Dafydd, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Swansea University, will have her Welsh-language novel ‘Y Llyfrgell’ (The Library) adapted into film as part of Film Agency for Wales’ ‘Cinematic’ scheme.

Fflur DafyddThe film is one of three projects that will be further developed in conjunction with BBC Film, BFI, Soda Pictures, and S4C.

Fflur had been working with the Film Agency for four years on developing the script when the opportunity arose to apply for funding through the ‘Cinematic’ scheme.

“I love that I, and the director Euros Lyn, have won the bid to produce our film this year. The project has been in place for several years and has been a personal ambition for me because I have seen this particular idea as a movie first” said the author of the Daniel Owen Memorial Prize-winning novel.

The other two projects that will be further developed under the ‘Cinematic’ scheme are 'Just Jim ' by Craig Roberts and Pip Broughton, and a horror film ' The Lighthouse ' by Chris Crow, Michael Jibson and David Lloyd.

Fflur says that she is overjoyed that Euros Lyn, who has worked on series such as Dr Who, Broadchurch and Last Tango in Halifax, will direct the film.

"Euros is an extremely talented director and I am delighted to be working with someone who is so highly experienced.”

Set in the National Library of Wales, ‘Y Llyfrgell’ is a story about twin sisters that set out to trap their mother’s killer.

Fflur says she has already been in contact with the National Library of Wales to discuss filming scenes there.

"The use of space as iconic as the National Library of Wales as a backdrop to the story is a great opportunity to introduce the treasures of Wales to wider audiences.”

Fflur hopes that the work of co - producing the film with Euros Lyn will begin in 2015 and will hit the big screen and the small screen in 2016.
