Baroness Hale of Richmond, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. visited Swansea University on Friday 14th June, as the guest of the Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People, to deliver the inaugural lecture for the Wales Observatory in Collaboration with UNICEF UK.

Lady Hale is the only woman to have been appointed to the position of Justice of the Supreme Court and has been assessed as the 4th most powerful woman in the United Kingdom.

A number of children and young people involved with projects promoting children’s rights in South Wales were able to take time out of their school/university schedule to make presentations to Lady Hale and the hosts about their work in advance of the lecture. These groups included:

  • Swansea University Human Rights Action - a student’s union society supported by the Wales Observatory.
  • Child Rights Unit – a project supporting implementation of children’s rights in Neath Port Talbot.
  • Pembrokeshire Travelling Ahead Group and Swansea Travelling Ahead Group - two groups of children representing gypsy and traveller children.
  • Swansea Rights Respecting Schools – a UNICEF supported project working toward better understanding of children’s rights in educational settings.
  • Pupils from Cadle Primary School

The presentations were engaging, informative and entertaining with the children presenting to Lady Hale a DVD of their work to take back to London as a memento. The children were then given the opportunity to talk to Lady Hale and the hosts and other guests at a specially prepared reception which included the Chancellor of the University, Rhodri Morgan, former First Minister of Wales and Raymond Ciborowski, Registrar and Chief Operating officer of the University.

Baroness Hale concluded her visit with the delivery of her lecture which was titled “Who’s afraid of Children’s Rights?” and which  focused in part on the initiatives taken in Wales which are leading the way in the UK. The lecture was well received by the 150 attendees and a transcript is available on the Wales Observatory website.

  • Lady Hale was met by hosts Ms Jane Williams and Dr Simon Hoffman, co-directors of the Observatory, the Hon Mr Justice Roderick Evans, Pro-Chancellor Swansea University, Professor John Linarelli, Head of School of Law and Mr Michael Draper, SAILS Lead for the College of Business Economics and Law.
