Midwifery Professor shortlisted for Leadership Award

Dr Alys Einion, Associate Professor of Midwifery and Women’s Health at Swansea University has been shortlisted for a Leadership Award in this year’s Chwarae Teg Womenspire Awards.

The Womenspire Awards celebrate the amazing achievements made by women across Wales. They include a wide range of categories to ensure that the winners will be reflective of the achievements being made by women from all walks of life.

Dr Einion has been shortlisted in the Leadership category, which celebrates women who have broken the mould and are leading by example.

Alys is a senior member of the midwifery team at Swansea University and supports her colleagues across the department as the Research lead, helping them find opportunities for funding, conferences and publication, and working with the research committee to help develop the College Research Strategy.

She is also the co-chair of the LGBT+ staff network for the University, giving staff training and acting as a guest speaker on issues relating to gender equality. As well as this, Alys is regularly published in areas of midwifery, women’s health and gender.

“It’s the team that makes the leader, and I could only have been shortlisted because I work with such talented and dedicated colleagues,” she said.

“It’s a real pleasure to be able to celebrate the work we do in promoting women’s health and wellbeing, as well as educating the midwives of the future. It’s also a great chance to highlight what we do as a University in promoting equality and supporting our staff to be the best that we can be.

“I am lucky to be supported and inspired by outstanding senior role models, such as Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott, and Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Stringer.”

Meanwhile, Swansea University has also been shortlisted in the Diversity Champion category for employment.

This award celebrates an organisation that has taken a proactive approach to close the gender divide in the workplace, with Swansea University being recognised for its work on addressing the underrepresentation of women in senior positions.

Factors critical to the success achieved to date include the University’s Performance Development Review (PDR) system, the Academic Promotions Process, Academic Career Pathways, positive role models and mentors, and achievement of the coveted Athena SWAN Silver Institution Award.

The awards take place on Thursday, June 5 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
