Course Overview

The MA in English Language Studies focuses on the academic study of the English Language using approaches from Modern Linguistics and Translation Studies.


Key Features

The MA allows students to enhance their understanding of the structure, components and use of the English language, and to develop the skills needed to analyse language in a variety of contexts, according to a range of theoretical approaches. The programme will equip students to enter professions in which English Language plays a central role, such as teaching, translation and interpretation, publishing, trade and diplomacy.

The College of Arts and Humanities has a Graduate Centre. The Graduate Centre fosters and supports individual and collaborative research activity of international excellence and offers a vibrant and supportive environment for students pursuing postgraduate research and taught masters study. The Centre provides postgraduate training to enhance academic and professional development and facilitates participation in seminar programmes, workshops and international conferences.


The full-time course structure is split across the year with three modules taken in each academic semester (a total of six modules in part one) and then a dissertation over the summer (part two).

Students study three compulsory modules, research methods or Language Teaching and two optional modules.

Part-time study is available.

Entry Requirements

The typical entry requirement is a first degree in English Language or a relevant discipline, normally a lower second or above or equivalent.  Overseas students are expected to possess an IELTS score of 6.5 (a minimum of 5.5 in each component).

Additional Costs

The tuition fees for the programme do not cover costs incurred personally by the student such as the purchase of books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.
