Swansea University welcome's visits for up to 1 year under the supervision of a Swansea academic member of staff.

Key Facts 

  • Visiting research students must be currently enrolled (or will be enrolled by visit start date) on a research degree programme at another Institution or are at the dissertation writing up stage (or will be by visit start date) of a master’s degree programme.
  • Visiting research students do not study formally for any modules and receive no formal accreditation or award for their time spent at Swansea.
  • Visits can be for 1 month up to 1 year in duration.
  • All visiting research students must formally apply via the University Admissions Office and formally enrol pending a successful application.
  • Non-EU students will be issued with the appropriate visa documentation by the University Admissions Office.
  • Non-EU student visits of greater than 6 months in duration are Tier 4 sponsored by Swansea University Admissions Office.
  • Non-EU student Visits up to 6 months are 'Short Term Study Visa' sponsored by Swansea University Admissions Office.
  • Visiting research students spending 1-12 months at Swansea are charged at 50% of the standard programme tuition fee level on a monthly pro-rata basis, fees can be paid by an individual or sponsor.
  • Bench fees may be charged In addition to visit tuition fee at the discretion of the admitting College/School.
  • Visit fees do not include accommodation, details on accommodation costs can be found here. 
  • Visiting research students spending greater than 1 calendar month up to 1 year at Swansea University are required to meet standard research programme English Language entry requirements for the admitting subject area, further details can be found here.

Less than 1 calendar month visit time

  • Visits are less than 1 calendar month in duration.
  • All visiting research students must formally apply via the University Admissions Office and formally enrol pending a successful application.
  • Non-EU students will be ‘short-term study’ sponsored.
  • Visiting research students are charged 50% of the standard programme tuition fee level on a pro-rata basis, fees can be paid by an individual or sponsor.
  • At the discretion of the Admitting College/School, visits of less than 1 calendar month can be free of charge.
  • Bench fees may be charged In addition to the above visit tuition fee at the discretion of the admitting College/School.
  • Visit fees do not include accommodation, details on accommodation costs can be found here.
  • Visiting research students spending less than 1 calendar month at Swansea University are required to hold a minimum of IELTS 5.5 overall (with at least 5.5 in each individual component) or Swansea University recognised equivalent, further details can be found here.

Associate Researcher

  • Visiting ‘Associate Researchers’ cannot be currently enrolled (or will be enrolled by visit start date) on a programme at another Institution.
  • Visits can be from 1 week to 1 year in duration.
  • All visiting ‘Associate Researchers’ must formally apply via the University Admissions Office and formally enrol pending a successful application.
  • Non-EU ‘Associate Researchers’ will be issued with the appropriate visa documentation.
  • Visiting ‘Associate Researchers’ are charged 25% of the standard programme tuition fee level on a pro-rata basis, fees can be paid by an individual or sponsor.
  • At the discretion of the Admitting College/School, visits of less than 1 calendar month can be free of charge.
  • Bench fees may be charged In addition to the above visit tuition fee at the discretion of the admitting College/School.
  • Visit fees do not include accommodation, details on accommodation costs can be found here.

Q. Can the English Language entry requirement be waived?
A. No, University and UKVI regulations do not allow for the above to be waived.

Q. How long before my planned visit should I apply?
A. We recommend a minimum of 3 months to allow for application consideration time, decision transmission, potential English Language testing and visa/travel time.

Q. Can the visit tuition fee be waived?
A. No, we have to apply visit fees unilaterally to all visitors.
