Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the PhD or MPhil Mechanical Engineering is a first or upper second class honours degree in Engineering or similar relevant discipline.

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2017/18 are as follows:

Additional Costs

The tuition fees for the PhD or MPhil Mechanical Engineering do not cover costs incurred personally by the student such as the purchase of books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.

Course Structure

PhD: Typically three years in duration (full-time) or six years (part-time). Students undertake supervised research.

MPhil: Typically two years in duration (full-time) or four years (part-time). Students undertake supervised research.



PhD: A thesis of no more than 100,000 words is submitted, which demonstrates original research that contributes significantly to the subject area, and assessment in the form of an oral examination (viva).

MPhil: A thesis of no more than 60,000 words is submitted, which demonstrates original research that contributes significantly to the subject area, and assessment in the form of an oral examination (viva). In some cases, there may be opportunities for students to continue onto a PhD.


Our new home at the innovative Bay Campus provides some of the best university facilities in the UK, in an outstanding location.

Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University has extensive laboratory and computing facilities for both teaching and research purposes.

In the mechanical laboratories are two large rotating rigs. One is used to study the dynamics of high speed machinery whilst the other is devoted to the analysis of heat transfer in turbine blade.

Hardware includes a 450 cpu Cluster, high-end graphics workstations and high-speed network links. Extensive software packages include both in-house developed and 'off-the-shelf' commercial.


The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 ranks Engineering at Swansea as 10th in the UK for the combined score in research quality across the Engineering disciplines.

World-leading research

The REF shows that 94% of research produced by our academic staff is of World-Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*) quality. This has increased from 73% in the 2008 RAE.

Research pioneered at the College of Engineering harnesses the expertise of academic staff within the department. This ground-breaking multidisciplinary research informs our world-class teaching with several of our staff leaders in their fields.
