Swansea University - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most frequently asked questions about postgraduate study. Please contact us if you require any further information.

How do I apply?

Information about how to apply for any of our postgraduate schemes can be found in our how to apply section. This includes a link to our online application form, and downloadable application forms for those applicants who prefer to make a paper application.

How much will it cost?

As a postgraduate student you will normally be expected to cover both your tuition fees  and maintenance costs such as rent and bills. The cost of your tuition will depend on the course you choose and whether you are a home, EU or international student.

Your living costs will vary according to where you choose to study and your preferred type of accommodation. Typically, annual living costs for a postgraduate student are the region of £6,000 to £8,000. Swansea is one of the cheapest places to study in the UK and rents in the locality are well below the national average. Typically a student in Swansea might expect to pay £50 - £65 rent per week.

Are Student Loans available?

Unlike undergraduate study, you will not be entitled to a government Student Loan as a postgraduate student but other loans are available:

  • Career Development Loans:  Loans of £300 to £8,000 are available for vocational courses of up to 2 years to anyone who lives in the UK and plans to work in UK or EU. For further information click here or telephone 0800 585 505.
  • Association of MBAs Loan Scheme: Available to students on accredited MBA courses (such as Swansea’s) who are paying their own fees. Students have to have been resident in the UK for the last three years and have at least two years relevant work experience. Loan repayments are made over 7 years and begin three months after the end of the course.
  • Professional Loan Schemes: Most banks offer some sort of professional loan scheme for students taking professional qualification.

Can I get funding?

You may be able to secure funding which will pay some or all of the costs associated with postgraduate study. The University offers a range of postgraduate scholarships and awards, and there are additional sources of funding which may be available to you.

Many postgraduate students fund their studies by working part-time. There are many opportunities for part-time employment in Swansea, and the JobShop service in the Career Centre will assist you in finding work either on or off campus.

Can I study part time?

Many of our postgraduate schemes are available on a part-time basis. Further details about how you study can be found in the postgraduate information on each of the Department's web pages.
