Dr Mark Evans gives paper to the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik in Croatia

Dr Mark Evans was invited to give a lecture at an international conference on “Philosophy and Democracy/Democracy and Education”, held at the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik, Croatia on 31 August - 4 September 2009.

The event was devoted to themes from John Dewey’s Democracy and Education and Dr Evans spoke on “Education and the Ethics of Democratic Character”, arguing that although democratic education seeks to promote a richly varied character-ideal among the citizens of tomorrow, many current theories and practices of education are systematically distorting it even while still paying lip-service to it. The full text of the lecture will shortly appear in Synthesis Philosophica, the journal of the Croatian Philosophical Association.

The conference was the latest in a series of collaborative events in which Dr Evans has participated with colleagues from Slovenia and Croatia with whom he also worked in the organisation of a conference on “Freedom and Democracy: European Perceptions, European Perspectives”, held at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska in Koper, Slovenia on December 4-6 2008.

The plenary lecture he delivered at this conference has just been translated and published in the Slovenian journal Poligrafi; the original English-language version is available here:

Dr. Mark Evans was a plenary speaker in the opening session of the 6th Bi-Annual Congress of the European Peace Research Association, “European Peace Architecture: Integration, Engagement and Cooperation”, which was held at the European University of Tirana in Albania on 23-25 July 2009.

He gave a presentation on “ ‘Just War’ as the War To End All Wars, or: Why Just War Theory Should Stand For Its Own (Ultimate) Redundancy”, in which he argued that just war theory should embrace the morality and practice of peacebuilding much concertedly than it has hitherto done.

His contribution to the Congress is the latest stage of his work on the theory of jus post bellum – justice in the ending and aftermath of war. The most recent publication resulting from this research, “Moral Responsibilities and the Conflicting Demands of Jus Post Bellum” has just been published in the Carnegie Council’s flagship journal Ethics and International Affairs (summer 2009), having been selected from the contributions to a workshop in which Dr Evans participated on “The Ethics of Postconflict Reconstruction and Statebuilding”, organised by the Centre for International Studies, Oxford University in June 2008.
