Politics and International Relations

Why Study Politics and International Relations

Politics and International Relations, based in the Department of Political and Cultural Studies, is one of the leading research-led units at Swansea University. We challenge our students to investigate the wide and complex issues arising from how our societies are currently organised in political terms, both domestically and internationally, and how they should or could be better organised in the future.

Politics is not just about studying government institutions and international relationships. It explores ‘governance’ in a broader sense, and critically appraises different visions of a more just and orderly society which can be traced back thousands of years, and which remain relevant to some of today’s most pressing crises and challenges.

International Relations focuses on both international and supranational forms of political cooperation and covers a range of subsidiary issues such as human rights, global justice, environmental issues, humanitarian intervention, international security, international development and global political economy.

Students can enrol on our Parliamentary Studies module(s) offered in Year 3. This prestigious module is approved and supported by the Speaker and Clerk of the House of Commons and the Lord Speaker and Clerk of Parliaments in the House of Lords. Students are taught in Swansea by officials from the Houses of Parliament and there is an organised visit to the Palace of Westminster, with some sessions attended by members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Students can also complete an internship programme at the National Assembly for Wales in Year 3 (this programme is competitive, so not every student will be able to participate).

Our undergraduate students have the option of spending a semester abroad in the second semester of Year 2 in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, or the USA and Postgraduate Taught Masters' students can study on one of our extended Masters schemes, spending a semester in the USA or the Philippines.
