The cryo-EDM experiment
Dirk Peter van der Werf has recently joined an ongoing experiment to improve the limit on, or indeed measure the value of, the electric dipole moment of the neutron. The cryo-EDM experiment currently involves several UK institutions and aims to use ultra-cold neutrons (available at the Institute Laue Langevin – ILL, Grenoble, France) to search for an electric dipole moment. Current measurements are consistent with zero, but this property is predicted to be finite by several theories of physics that go beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Thus, this experiment is a test, at ultra-low energies, of particle physics theory.
