Induction is the process of orientating a new member of staff to their job role and their new working environment. This means that in addition to providing training to support an employee in their job, thought needs to be given to integrating the new starter into the work team and into Swansea University as a whole.
The overall responsibility for induction lies with the line manager of the new employee. The manager should start to plan for the staff member’s induction from the point that they are appointed into post. The guidance about how to do this is outlined here:
Support for Induction
To support staff during their induction, the University provides training for new members of staff in the form of:
- University Induction and Vice Chancellors Welcome – all new members of staff should book themselves on to both the staff induction and Vice Chancellors Welcome events which provide an introduction to Swansea and an opportunity to meet colleagues from different parts of the University. Bookings can be made via the ABW self service booking system.
- Online Statutory and Essential Training – all members of staff are set up with an account on which they can access mandatory equality & diversity training and health & safety e-learning programmes. It is important that the opportunity to complete these programmes is built into any induction plan.
