Workplace Equality Index
Swansea University takes part in Stonewall's Workplace Equality Index (WEI), a charter which measures employer's efforts to tackle discrimination and create an inclusive workplace for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB) employees.
In 2017, Swansea University was ranked at number 31 out of 100 – placing Swansea second of all participating universities.
The WEI is a powerful evidence-based benchmarking tool used by employers to assess their achievements and progress on LGBT equality in the workplace. Each participant must demonstrate their expertise in 10 distinct areas of employment policy and practice, including networking groups, career development, training and community engagement.
At the same time, staff from across each organisation take part in an anonymous survey about their employers’ attitudes towards workplace culture, diversity and inclusion. Over 60,000 staff took part in 2016, making it one of the largest national employment surveys in Britain.
Swansea University's WEI submission is led by Cath Elms, LGBT+ Staff Network co-chair, with support from the LGBT+ Staff Network and Equality Team.

What is LGBT+?
LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender.
Lesbian = a woman who is attracted to other women
Gay = a man who is attracted to other men
Bisexual = individuals attracted to people regardless of their gender
Transgender = someone who transitions from a man to a woman, or a woman to a man. This includes individuals who are considering transitioning and individuals who define a gender identity that is different to the person’s sex at birth.
The plus (+) relates to other sexual and gender identities, including (but not limited to) pansexual, asexual, intersex, questioning, queer, genderqueer, polysexual.
LGBT+ Staff Network
The University has an established LGBT+ Staff Network, which holds regular social events, networking opportunities, workshops and training, as well as providing information and guidance on matters relating to LGBT+. The network offers confidential support and advice to all staff (not only those who identify as LGBT+). Staff are able to report bullying and harassment incidents on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity to the Network co-chairs. The Network is co-chaired by Dr Alys Einion and Ms Cath Elms.
