Emma Frearson Emmanuel
Emma’s passion for higher education, for internationalisation, and for Swansea University, was first ignited when she came here to study for her undergraduate degree. Since then, her passion and dedication have given thousands of students from around the world the opportunity to experience studying abroad, both enabling Swansea University students to spend a period overseas, and international students to come to Swansea to study.
As one of the first cohort of American Studies students, Emma spent a transformational year abroad in the USA, studying at Louisiana State University. It was this experience that set her on a career path of internationalisation within higher education. Her first post was as Study Abroad Coordinator in the Department of American Studies where she built up exchange and visiting programmes with the USA from 25 to 250 students annually including a successful internship programme. She was also instrumental in the early days of BUTEX, a sector body for study abroad and exchange between the UK and US.
In 2005, Emma joined the International Office, moving to a role which focused on the recruitment of international students from a range of existing and new markets including India, Nigeria, Turkey, the USA, Canada and Norway. She was appointed Head of International Recruitment in 2008 and contributed to the development of the current International Development Office (IDO) which took on a wider remit of internationalisation. She was made Head of the IDO in 2013, leading a team of nearly 30 staff including a number based at the University’s overseas offices. Under her leadership, international and EU student numbers have increased by 37% in the last 5 years and the IDO has been shortlisted for two Times Higher awards.
Most recently, Emma took on the role of Acting Director for Marketing, Development and Internationalisation during Catherine Marks’ maternity leave.
Creative and solution-driven, Emma is known for her “can do” attitude and she inspires this in those who work with her and for her.
