Having graduated as the student with the highest score in her year - a first-class degree in Business Studies, German Studies and Educational Science from Mannheim University, Swansea's twin town and university - Ute Keller entered into the prestigious exchange programme between the two institutions with a full scholarship.
After studying in the University’s German Department and completing an internship as part of the Gateway to Export Programme, she joined the German Department in October 1992 as Fachlektorin, initially mainly offering Business language courses to students at all levels.
For her successful approach to teaching she has been awarded, on three consecutive occasions, the University’s highest award for excellence in learning and teaching, the last of which was further enhanced so that she is the first, and so far only member of staff to hold the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award.
On the administration side she was instrumental in setting up the Languages for All Programme and has administered the Year Abroad for students completing intercalary placements in German-speaking countries.
As part of her role as Departmental Erasmus-Coordinator she has facilitated work placements for students with prestigious companies such as Porsche, Volkswagen, Siemens, SAP, Bosch, Stylefruits and translation agencies in Munich and Berlin.
Several of these work placements have resulted either in continued employment with the original host company or progression to other employment in Germany.
Recognizing and realising the potential of students is the drive behind her dedication towards education, whether by instilling a true passion for language learning or by opening doors into the world of work.
