What is the Postgraduate Internship Programme?

The 8 week Internship Programme has been designed specifically to combine in-class learning with practical experience through a six week internship within either a political institution or a non-governmental organisation (NGO). The programme is part of a student exchange arrangement and does not incur additional tuition fees at Swansea University.

Programme Format

8 weeks of study comprised of:

  • Introduction to British and European Politics (10 hours/week)
  • Internship with political institution or NGO (80 hours in total)
  • Policy-making in British and European Context (10 hours/week)

National Assembly for Wales

The National Assembly for Wales is a devolved parliament based in Cardiff with the power to enact laws for Wales (www.assembly.wales). Students will work alongside an Assembly Member and witness first-hand how legislation is made and how it impacts on constituencies. Students’ activities range from research support, assisting writing policy briefs or reports, writing press releases or contributing to speeches and parliamentary questions.

House of Commons

The House of Commons is the directly elected chamber of Parliament based in London. Students will work alongside a Member of Parliament and gain an insight into the multilevel dimension of policy-making and representation of constituency interests. Students’ activities range from research support, assisting writing policy briefs or reports, writing press releases or contributing to speeches and parliamentary questions.

Wales Centre for Public Policy

The Wales Centre for Public Policy is a Cardiff based, independent institute that seeks to use evidence to improve policy and practice in Wales and beyond. Students will gain an insight into the work of policy experts and policy advisors with tasks covering research support, data gathering, or writing policy briefs and liasing with the Welsh Government and public sector organisations in Wales. 

Race Council Cymru

Race Council Cymru is a Cardiff based non-profit organisation that aims to combat prejudice, race discrimination, harassment and abuse while at the same time promoting art and celebrating the vibrant black and ethnic minority contribution through Art, Culture and Heritage activities across Wales.

EYST

EYST - Ethnic Minorities & Youth Support Team - is a Swansea-based charity organisation providing a culturally sensitive and holistic support service for young BME people aged 11-25. EYST also ams to challende and counter negative stereotypes about ethnic diveristy and to increase awareness and understanding about the diverse communities who live in Wales.
