The Unit for study of Doctors’ and Medical Students’ Mental Health and Wellbeing

About

About The Unit

The Unit for study of Doctors’ and Medical Students’ Mental Health and Wellbeing is a group of academics, researchers and support staff. We are hosted by Swansea University Medical School. We are brought together by a common interest in the provision of support for medical students and doctors who have mental health problems.

Who We Are

Medical students and doctors in training are more prone to mental illness than the general population and age-matched controls. This is exacerbated by the fact that being a junior doctor or a medical student might prevent you from getting the medical care and support you need should you develop a problem with your mental health.

Our work is motivated by two fundamental principles.

  1. Medical students and doctors in training are entitled to accessible mental health care and their career choice should not, in any way, inhibit them from accessing this care if and when it is needed.
  2. The general public has a vested interest in the mental health of present and future doctors. It is in their interests that the doctors treating them have accessed appropriate care for any mental health concerns.

What We Do

The unit provides a focus for all those with an interest in supporting medical students and doctors in training with mental health problems.

In particular we are interested in

  1. Bringing together a critical mass of people with varied background and training who are better able to carry out research into support for medical students and doctors in training with mental health concerns as a group than they can individually.
  2. To identify appropriate sources of research funds
  3. To jointly write successful bids for research funding
  4. To liaise with national bodies involved in supporting medical students and doctors in training to include BMA, GMC, Doctors Support Network, the Physician Health Programme and others
  5. To provide an identifiable point of contact for national and international bodies with an interest in doctors’ and medical students’ mental health
  6. To host national and international academic meetings for those interested in doctors’ and medical students’ mental health.

Get in Contact if:

  • You have an interest in the support of doctors and medical students with mental health problems.
  • You would like to network with others with similar interests
  • You would like others to work with you on a grant application.
  • You would like to disseminate best practice or findings from your research
