Patient & Population Health and Informatics (PPHI)

Patient & Population Health and Informatics (PPHI) is one of the four major research themes of the Institute of Life Science at the Medical School, Swansea University.

PPHI is a multidisciplinary research centre of international standing, conducting eHealth and Informatics Research, Health Services Research and Population Health Studies.  Its goal is to make a difference to people’s lives by substantially improving their health and the delivery of health services.

PPHI is achieving these aims through collaborative interdisciplinary research, with the use of anonymised linked routine data at its core, and the rigorous application of existing and new methods and trials, both quantitative and qualitative.

The PPHI theme has evolved from pioneering work at Swansea in the 1990s on linking health data sets and defining rigorous standards for medical records, to the establishment of the SAIL databank in 2006,  to our major partnership in the new UKRC informatics initiatives of the UK Farr Institute and the UK Administrative Data Research Network.
