Institute of Mass Spectrometry

Welcome to the Institute of Mass Spectrometry at the College of Medicine

Swansea University has long been established as a centre of excellence for mass spectrometry, a discipline that involves the ionization of a sample to produce either positive or negative ions, which are then accelerated in a vacuum system and the mass of the intact molecule determined. In addition, the masses of fragments produced during the ionisation processes can be determined to give structural information.

Within the Institute of Mass Spectrometry at Swansea University's College of Medicine, there are three main strands:

Teaching

These unique programmes are designed to give Science and Engineering graduates a vocationally-relevant qualification which will equip them with skills and expertise to enter a wide range of industries.  The schemes have been designed with industry, for industry, offering study modes to suit vocational learning.

EPSRC National Mass Spectrometry Facility

The Institute of Mass Spectrometry is home to the EPSRC National Mass Spectrometry Facility, which offers comprehensive mass spectrometry service for university research groups throughout the UK.

Research

Swansea University has long been established as a centre of excellence for mass spectrometry, with the Royal Society Research Unit here in the 1970s followed by the Mass Spectrometry Research Unit, then the EPSRC National Mass Spectrometry Service Centre in the 1980s and now the EPSRC National Mass Spectrometry Facility.
