College of Medicine celebrates its Graduates achievements

With Graduation week in full swing at Swansea University, Monday (14th July) saw all of the College of Medicine cohorts graduate in the spectacular ceremony at the newly-refurbished Brangwyn Hall.

It was not only a special day for the graduates and their families, but also a landmark day for the College as it saw the first Graduate Entry Medicine students awarded with Swansea University medical degrees.

This is all thanks to the Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) status, which was awarded to Swansea University in February 2014 by the General Medical Council and allows the university to award its own medical degrees.  Other cohorts that graduated were from Undergraduate programmes in Biochemistry and Genetics as well as Postgraduate and Higher degrees. ‌

The evening before, Sunday July 13th 2014, the College hosted a Graduation Celebration at the Marriott Hotel in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter. Students, along with their guests and staff from the College gathered for a special evening of celebration. The evening was opened by Côr Dathlu Cwmtawe Male Choir, after which the guests saw awards presented to the College’s most outstanding Genetics and Biochemistry graduates and the newly-qualified medics read the Doctor’s Oath. This is the graduates pledge as they enter the medical profession to practice medicine honestly.  As a gift from the College’s charity St David’s Medical Foundation, the medics were also presented with glass plates engraved with the oath.

Overall, the College is elated with the achievements of its recent graduates and looks forward to following them in their future endeavours.

Awards on the evening went to:

The Graduates’ Prize in Biochemistry awarded to Jayne Armstrong, Rhiannon Forsyth and Robert Maple

The Graduates’ Prize in Genetics awarded to Carmen Bedford and Emily Mears

The Roger Gilbert Prize in Genetics awarded to Simon Kellaway and Samuel West

The Jim Parry Prize in Genetics awarded to Zara Ahmed and Joanna Callan

The Oxford University Press Prize awarded to Sebastian Sabilowicz

The J.A. Beardmore Prize in Genetics awarded to William Howe and Samantha Thomas

Congratulations to all of the winners
