Ernest Azzopardi has recently been awarded the Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Ernest is a specialist registrar in plastic surgery and was the inaugural Welsh Clinical Academic Trainee in 2009.
This is among the most prestigious honours awarded by the Royal College being first awarded in 1810.
Since then, recipients included names such as Pott, Brodie, Spencer-Wells, Moynihan, and more recently, Sir Harold Ellis, Sir Roy Calne and Sir Bruce Keogh. Previous incumbents from Swansea University include Professor John Behnon and Mr Dean Edward Boyce. Ernest is the only person to have been awarded both the Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of England and the Sir James Syme Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh for earlier works. Ernest will deliver his oration to the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) in December.
