Graduate Entry Medicine Programme

Wales' unique accelerated medical programme for graduates

  • 4-year 'fast-track' medical degree
  • Graduates of any discipline welcome
  • Live and study in Swansea, with clinical placements in surrounding NHS Trusts
  • Clinical-case based learning
  • Learning Opportunities in the Clinical Setting (LOCS) throughout the programme

Course Overview
The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme is fully integrated with all the necessary teaching and learning designed to lead you on a journey; from exploring simple clinical problems as a novice, through repeated cycles of learning and practice, to the development of a knowledgeable, skilled and professional doctor.

It is a four year programme, in which each year follows a pattern of learning weeks interspersed with blocks of clinical placements, elective periods and with a final shadowing period. Learning is defined by learning outcomes, delivered primarily as lectures with opportunities to develop and discuss ideas in both group fora and tutorials.  This knowledge is then consolidated by clinical exposure during Learning Opportunities in the Clinical Setting (LOCS) and Community Based Teaching. Clinical placements allow you to practise your skills and develop your understanding of the wider social and organisational aspects of medicine.

Teaching rotates through intervals spent at Swansea University campus and the surrounding NHS Trusts.  Assessments are arranged in four educational domains – Intellectual Skills, Practical Skills, Transferable Skills and Professional Development – and these are assessed during each term.  The academic staff delivering this programme are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, including experienced clinicians (general practitioners, hospital specialists and public health practitioners), biomedical scientists and social scientists. They will guide you through this interdisciplinary and integrated programme with the aim of providing you with the best possible learning experience.

Entry Requirements
To apply for the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme at Swansea University, you should:

  • be classed as a ‘home student’ (UK and European Union citizens)
  • be a graduate, or predicted to graduate, with an upper second or first class honours degree in any subject
  • have at least some experience of Biology or Chemistry at post-GCSE (or equivalent) level
  • be able to demonstrate a proficiency in mathematics and English language.
  • have performed satisfactorily in the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT)

If you meet all of the above criteria, then you can apply through UCAS.  Competition for places is fierce, with many applicants having both a good first degree and postgraduate qualifications, but all applications will be treated fairly and individually on their merits.  Approximately 500 applications have been received per year since the programme launched in September 2004 and there are typically only 70 places available.
