On Wednesday 22 March, Professor Phil Scraton, the man who led the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s research team, will deliver a free public lecture at Swansea University, discussing the lengthy investigation into the 1989 disaster.

Title: Hillsborough: Resisting Injustice, Recovering Truth

Date: Wednesday 22 March

Time: 6pm - reception with light refreshments from 5.30pm

Venue: faraday Lecture Theatre, Singleton Park Campus, Swansea, SA2 8PP

Since 1989, Phil Scraton has worked with the families and survivors of the disaster.  He was advisor to the families’ legal teams throughout the inquests; headed the Independent Panel’s research, and was primary author of the ground-breaking Hillsborough: The Report of the Independent Panel (2012).

In April 2016, an inquest jury concluded that the 96 who died in the crush at Hillsborough stadium on 15 April 1989 were unlawfully killed, marking a major milestone in the bereaved families’ journey for justice.

Professor Scraton's highly-acclaimed book, Hillsborough: The Truth, is regarded as a definitive account of the disaster.

His critical analysis of the investigations, inquiries and inquests into the controversial deaths of 96 men, women and children at the FA Cup Semi-Final in April 1989 was instrumental in the Home Secretary establishing the Hillsborough Independent Panel to review hundreds of thousands of documents held by over 80 organisations.

In this public lecture, Professor Scraton will reflect on the long-term campaign for truth; detailing the findings, analysing the new inquests, their outcome, the work of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, and the case for prosecutions.

A question and answer session will immediately follow the lecture.

The lecture is organised by the British Society of Criminology Wales Branch in partnership with Swansea University’s College of Law and Criminology.

This free lecture will be held at 6pm in the Faraday Lecture Theatre on the Singleton Park Campus on Wednesday 22 March.
