Two Swansea University students have decided to help women in the Swansea area by launching Swansea’s first Positive Birth Movement group.

Zanet and Sally AnnZanet Papadamakis (pictured left) and Sally Ann Evans are both studying for the new Higher Education Certificate in Maternity Care at the University’s College of Human and Health Sciences.

Sally Ann said: “The Positive Birth Movement has over 400 groups around the world aimed at making the birth experience positive for as many women as possible.  But there is no such group in Swansea.”

“In setting up the group, our primary aim is to encourage women to have a positive view of birth; and to ensure all women are respected in their choices and decisions through open and friendly discussion.”

Zanet said: ‘’Working as a doula, I have always had a sense of community and I felt that there was a desperate need for a local Positive Birth Movement group in Swansea as the nearest one is about 30 miles away.

“We immediately received support from the Welsh Doula Network and the Kindercafe who offer a ‘toddlers and breastfeeding friendly’ environment.’’

‘’The ‘discussion’ group is open for anybody who has a keen interest in improving pregnant woman’s health by simply empowering their choices and enhancing a positive attitude towards birth culture.’’

The meetings will take place on the last Thursday of every month from 12pm to 2pm at the Kindercafe, 24 Nelson Street, Swansea.  The first meeting will be held on 26 May.

Sally Ann said: “Women are welcome to bring along family, friends and children. Breastfeeding mums are also most welcome.”

Zanet said: “We are very excited at the prospect of bringing mums/prospective mums in the Swansea area together to create a positive view of the birth experience and we look forward to the group becoming a popular and regular event.”
