One of the world's premier aerobatic display teams, the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows, will again take to the skies over Swansea Bay for the Wales National Airshow this weekend (July 11 and 12), with sponsorship and support from Swansea University.

Red Arrows over Mumbles‌A Swansea University spokesperson said: “The Wales National Air Show is one of the biggest events in the Swansea calendar and we are honoured to be sponsoring the world-famous Red Arrows.

“The sweep of beautiful Swansea Bay, which links the Singleton Park Campus and our new Bay Campus, will provide the perfect backdrop for their thrilling display.”

Taking over the position of Red 1 this year – and leading the other eight display pilots that make up the famous Diamond Nine of the Red Arrows – is Squadron Leader David Montenegro, who was a team pilot between 2009 and 2011.

He said: “Returning to the team as Red 1 and having a further opportunity to work with such talented pilots, engineers and support staff, and to continue the very close relationship between the Armed Forces, the Red Arrows and the UK public, is very exciting indeed.

“For me, the Red Arrows as a team is a microcosm of the Royal Air Force. The team’s make-up represents a broad cross-section of the highly trained, extremely professional and selflessly motivated personnel of the Royal Air Force, who are operationally experienced in numerous humanitarian tasks and combat missions throughout the world.

“As global ambassadors for the Royal Air Force, the UK’s Armed Forces and its trade and industry alike, the Red Arrows continuously drive forward to display what is great about Britain.

“To be a part of, and lead, such an iconic Squadron, embedded deep within the British psyche, is a great responsibility and a huge honour.”

The Red Arrows are the public face of the Royal Air Force Service and represent the United Kingdom both at home and overseas.  The Red Arrows also assist recruitment into the Armed Forces, promote the excellence of the Royal Air Force, support British industry and assist defence diplomacy.

The team, based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, is made up of 120 people, including pilots, engineers and essential support staff.  Together, they demonstrate the excellence and capabilities of the Royal Air Force and the Service’s skilled, talented people.
