Professor Stevie Davies, lecturer at Swansea University is to complete a charity swim in aid of her friend and colleague, Swansea poet, and Swansea University lecturer, Nigel Jenkins, who died of pancreatic cancer in January this year.

Professor Davies said: “Nigel was a unique teacher of poetry. I know that all the student writers whose lives have been touched by his kindness and wisdom will feel the sadness of Nigel’s passing. Our aim at Swansea is to convert that sorrow into something positive and meaningful. We are resolutely pledged to continue in Nigel's spirit.

“The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is doing such needful work. We know that 40 years ago only 3% of people diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer survived for five years or more. Today that figure is still, shockingly, 3%.”

To raise money for this very worthy cause, I plan to swim from Rotherslade Beach, Nigel's 'Plage Principale', to Norton Point, one quiet day in August (prudently accompanied by a life-guard). Shortly before he died, I ran this past Nigel. He thought it a great idea.”

Dr Davies has set up a page at the Just Giving website: http://www.justgiving.com/Stevie-Davies2 if you would like to support this effort.
