Swansea University Physics alumnus Professor Dewi Lewis, Amersham International plc and CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research), will give a public lecture at the University on Thursday 20th November.

Speaker: Professor Dewi Lewis, Amersham International plc and CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research)

Title: Radiation Science - a Technology Platform for the Healthcare Industry

Date: Thursday 20th November 2014

Time: 7:30pm (with light refreshments available from 7pm)

Venue: Faraday A Lecture Theatre, Faraday Building, Swansea University

Admission is free and all welcome.

This is a joint Institution of Engineering and Technology/Institute of Physics lecture.

Lecture detail: Ever since 1895 when Wilhelm Rontgen realised the possible applications of X-rays, radiation science has played a central role in the diagnosis of diseases and the treatment of human illness. Developments for both medical devices and radiopharmaceuticals have relied on the interchange of knowledge and expertise between academic research laboratories, clinical centres and industry.

This lecture will review some of the basic physics involved, the technology and engineering that is used to provide us with some very complicated, modern-day patient procedures.

Recent advances of radiation science and physics will be described together with a commentary on the role of the various organisations and individuals who have collaborated to validate, to register and to implement these latest medical techniques.
