Swansea University is seeking engineers and scientists to undertake ten PhD studentships and a further five postdoctoral research posts that are being funded by a Welsh Government initiative to encourage more science and engineering talent into Wales.

The 15 posts are funded by the Sêr Cymru programme which established the £7 million National Research Network in Advanced Engineering and Materials (Engineering NRN) led by Swansea University as one of three National Research Networks created to boost research investment in areas identified as having the greatest potential for Wales.  The other two networks are the Low Carbon, Energy and the Environment Network at Bangor and Aberystwyth Universities and the Life Sciences and Health Network at Cardiff University.

The Engineering NRN headed by Professor Javier Bonet, who is also head of the College of Engineering at Swansea University, is now looking to recruit engineering students to apply for the PhD studentships.

The successful candidates will support the network in three key areas of research: Materials and Innovative Manufacturing Processes; Advanced Sensors and Devices; and Novel Modelling Techniques. Their research projects will also focus on improving collaborative research in advanced engineering and materials in Wales, leading to increased research, gaining more grant funding, improved engagement with research users and more effective knowledge transfer and outreach activities.

Professor Steve Brown, who is Deputy Head and Director of Research in the College of Engineering said: “These new Welsh Government funded posts are a perfect opportunity for young scientists and engineers to engage in research at the highest level in areas of significant scientific, economic and societal importance. For the successful candidates we expect that a long and prosperous career begins here.”
