Swansea University and Vinci Construction gave local students and teachers a behind the scenes look at the new Bay Campus site on Friday, September 27, as part of the UK-wide Open Doors initiative.

Open Doors3Organised by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), the Scottish Contractors Group (SCG), the Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council, CITB, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Considerate Constructors Scheme, Open Doors gives participants a safe, exciting and unique look at major construction sites across the country over one weekend.

The UK’s leading regeneration specialist St. Modwen is developing the Bay Campus with their construction partner Vinci and Swansea University’s framework contractor Leadbitter. Work started on the Bay Campus site in May 2013 and will be completed by September 2015.

Open Doors2Students from Gower College Swansea, Bishopston Comprehensive, and the NPTC Group (formerly known as Neath Port Talbot College and Coleg Powys), along with teachers from Cefn Hengoed School, visited the location on Fabian Way to witness the process of construction and the progress that has already been made on the site.

The guests watched a film and received a short presentation about the scheme, followed by a site tour. There were also people on hand to speak to them about the wide range of jobs and careers the construction industry has to offer.

The development programme heralds a new era for Swansea University. The Singleton Park Campus and the new Bay Campus will be closely linked in order to grow its strong identity, maintain the outstanding student experience and support the ever-increasing, multi-disciplinary research undertaken with industry across its academic Colleges.
