The Saunders Lewis Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Dr Rhianedd Jewell, Tutor at Swansea University’s Academi Hywel Teifi.

The scholarship was awarded to two applicants this year and Dr Jewell will use her share of the award, £4,000 to analyse Saunders Lewis’ translations of plays written by two prominent French playwrights.

She will study plays by both Samuel Beckett and Moliere by comparing changes to their original texts and explaining the reasons behind those changes.

She hopes to question whether translators are entitled to amend original work and to what extent translation can be defined as an independent work of art.

Over a period of two years, Dr Jewell will use the facilities at Oxford University to assist with her work before presenting a piece suitable for publication.

This will enable the promising academic to return to familiar ground as she spent several years studying modern languages at Oxford University before gaining a PhD in Italian Literature last year.

Dr Jewell follows in the footsteps of another Swansea academic who received the scholarship last year. The funding enabled Professor Tudur Hallam, Professor in Welsh and Academi Hywel Teifi’s Research Director to prepare a study of Saunders Lewis’ dramatic works in 2010.

Dr Jewell said: ‘‘I’m extremely grateful for the support I will receive as a result of the scholarship which will enable me to draw together an original study of Saunders Lewis’ translation work.’’

Dr Gwenno Ffrancon, Director of Academi Hywel Teifi concluded: ‘‘We are delighted to hear of Rhianedd’s success here at the Academi and wish her the best of luck as she prepares to expand our understanding and awareness of Saunders Lewis’ substantial contribution to Welsh intelligence.’’
