Forty pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera will be taking part in an Olympic themed Taste of University Life workshop at Swansea University on Friday 1 June 2012.
The event has been arranged by The South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership in collaboration with the Department of History and Classics at Swansea University.
With the Olympic Games just around the corner, Ystalyfera pupils will be taught about the ancient Greek Olympics and how they have developed in modern society.
They will be divided into five separate teams; Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Megara and Argos and will be participating in several hands on activities including Mascot making and creating team mottos through the medium of ancient Greek language.
Pupils will also be given a presentation and quiz on the political dimension of the modern Olympics and Student ambassadors from the College of Arts and Humanities will be on hand to speak to them about studying at University, student life, and degrees on offer in the Humanities subject areas.
Mai Musié, The South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership Project Development Officer said: “As the build up to the London Olympics gathers pace, this will provide the pupils with a great opportunity to get involved in the spirit of the Games through the medium of Welsh. It is great to see that so many pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera are interested in attending the workshop and I sincerely hope that they have a great day.’’
