New scholarships to relieve financial burden on postgraduates

Twenty scholarships are being made available for Swansea University Masters programmes starting in September 2011: welcome news for cash-strapped graduates.

Worth £2,700 towards fees, the new scholarships are widely coveted by those wanting to stand out in today’s highly competitive employment market.

Victoria Stockley is a Swansea University BSc in Mathematics graduate who took advantage of University support to fund her Masters; achieving an MSc in Finance in 2009. Victoria now works as an underwriter for Zurich Financial Services.

    Vicky Stockley

"The main reason for pursuing a postgraduate course was to enhance my employability," Victoria explained. “With record numbers of graduates I was increasingly worried about my chances of finding a job after university.

"But one of my major concerns was funding an extra year at university and the fact that I couldn’t get a standard student loan like I did for my undergraduate degree. After looking at other avenues of funding I found out about a scholarship the university offered.

"The award covered just under half of my tuition fees, which was a great help in easing the financial burden of postgraduate study.”
